A Shabbat Devoted to Music – 2/3

Our Friday night Shabbat service on February 3 will focus on music, as it is Shabbat Shira, the Sabbath of Song, when the Israelites celebrated their safe crossing of the Sea of Reeds and eluded the pursuing Egyptian chariot army.  It is also the first yahzeit of Debbie Friedman, a singer and a songwriter who took our ancient liturgy and gave it a broad appeal to modern worshippers.  Debbie was a good friend of the LGBT community and of Congregation Etz Chaim in particular.  She gave her only Hanukkah concert in 2009 as a fund-raiser for our synagogue.  In fact, it was the last Hanukkah concert Debbie ever did.  Shabbat Shira and Debbie Friedman’s yahrzeit – what other than music could be the cornerstone of such a Shabbat service!  The Service will be led by Allen Nadler, who will also give the derasha, not surprisingly, on the topic of music.  Our own hazzan, Jerry Berkowitz, will be joined by guest cantorial soloist, Michael Greenspan, to provide lots of beautiful music, including several Debbie Friedman songs.  Even our post-service Oneg Shabbat will have musical overtones:  Charlie Rube and Eduardo Garcia are sponsoring the Oneg in honor of the yahrzeits of Charlie’s parents, and his father was the renowned cantor, Sidney Rube.  Please join us for a special evening of prayer and remembrance given voice in uplifting song.

Friday Evening Shabbat Service – 12/9 8:00 PM

Our Friday evening services welcoming in Shabbat are a great way to unwind at the end of the week and reconnect with your spiritual self.  The post-service oneg shabbat is a time for noshing and schmoozing in a relaxed social environment:  catch up with old friends, or meet some new ones.

The Torah portion associated with this Shabbat is packed with famous stories.  We have Jacob wrestling with the mysterious apparition; the reconciliation of Jacob and his brother Esau; the rape of Dinah and her brothers’ revenge on the attackers; and the birth of Benjamin which resulted in the death of his mother, Rachel, Jacob’s beloved wife.

Join Us for Shabbat Friday Nov. 25

Shabbat Service
Friday, Nov 18th, 8:00 PM at the Synagogue

Torah Portion: Toldot: Genesis 25:19-28:9
Haftarah: Malachi 1:1-2:7

While this week’s Torah portion, Toldot, is best known for Jacob craftily obtaining the older-son-birthright from his brother by bribing him with a tasty stew, the reading also contains a passage appropriate to our American Thanksgiving:  Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and I will bless you

The early Massachusetts settlers to whom we look back as the originators of our Thanksgiving holiday believed themselves to be a New Israel in a New Promised Land, transplanting the convenant made with our Jewish Patriarchs in hopes of making it prosper through piety and perserverence in a New World.
