Etz Chaim Needs Your Support
Congregation Etz Chaim has always been a unique institution celebrating Jewish religious diversity. While widespread acceptance has improved over the 38 years of our existence, many challenges remain. Sometimes, sadly, we are reminded that some of our harshest critics are Jews themselves, as seen in the recent tensions in Israel centering around ultra-Orthodox attempts to impose a singlular restricted extremist view of Judaism. Events like this highlight the importance of continuing the mission of Etz Chaim. We can only do this with the support of members and friends, at home and in cyberspace. Just as others planted the Etz Chaim “tree” years before you looked for or needed it, so are you being asked to maintain our “tree of life” for those who will come after you. Please see below for how to make your donation. Thank you!

Passing of Sandra Pasternak
We are saddened to announce the passing of long-time Etz Chaim member Sandra Pasternak.
The service will be held on Monday, October 3, at 7:30am, at Beth David Memorial Gardens, located at 3201 NW 72nd Ave, Hollywood, FL. Please note this new time.
Merciful One, grant healing, comfort, and strength to those who mourn the loss of Sandra Pasternak. May her memory be a source of blessing in their lives. May they find consolation and peace with each other, and turn to doing deeds that strengthen the bonds of the living.

Simplifying our Online Presence
You have 10 Jews you get 15 domain names. Well no longer. We are simplifying our online presense to make it easier for people to find and interact with us. From now on both our web site and e-mail will use the single EtzChaimFlorida.org domain name. On the web we are at www.EtzChaimFlorida.org . You can e-mail us with Info@EtzChaimFlorida.org for the office and Rabbi Noah directly at ExecutiveDirector@EtzChaimFlorida.org . With these changes we can continue to build our web presence into a hub for all things Gay and Jewish in South Florida.
Of course we’re also on Facebook as CongregationEtzChaim
If you have any link suggestions to put on the web site please e-mail us.

SCRIP Program Coming! – 9/13
Scrip is coming! What is Scrip? It’s a program that helps financially support Etz Chaim when you shop at many of the stores and merchants you currently visit, and at no extra cost to you! There will be an introductory meeting at the synagogue the evening of Tuesday, September 13th at 7:30 PM. Watch your mail and E-Schmooze for more information!

Changing of the Guard
Due to recent personal/career time constraints I will no longer be able to perform my duties as elected as the President of Congregation Etz Chaim, Inc.
Therefore, I hereby resign my office effective July 31, 2011. This decision is no way a reflection on our professional staff or any Board member, but is a direct result of the time needed by me in my personal career now that I am job hunting full time.
If the Board sees it in their wisdom to honor me with the title of Immediate Past President, which requires a Board vote when a President steps down before the end of his/her term, I would be honored to be so named, and thus continue on the Board.
It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve this congregation for the past 13 months. Our road has been rocky at times and surely not an easy one; however, as a group we accomplished our fiscal and professional goals so that Congregation Etz Chaim will continue to be vibrant, current, and alive.
Yours,
David R. Yalen
(NOTE:) The Board accepted David’s resignation and under the terms of our by-laws the current Executive Vice President Lauren Gultz will take the office of President of Congregation Etz Chaim on August 1, 2011. Additionally the Board voted to name David Yalen as Immediate Past president and voted to name Ellen Slavin as Executive Vice President.
